What your child needs:

  •  Fixed Blade -  Fixed blade knives have a blade that extends into the handle of the knife (non-foldable knife). The blade can be either full tang or partial tang, meaning that the blade can either extend the entire length of the handle or partially into the handle. Typically, full-tang knives are stronger and more durable than partial-tang knives. (no folding knives are allowed in this program.)

(No child will use their knife until they complete our knife safety course)

  • Notebook - Please provide your child with a durable small-sized notebook they can carry with them. This will be used to record the names of plants, and animals, draw sketches, take notes, etc. Also, provide your child with pencils we can sharpen and use in the field.

  • BackPack - Your child will be doing lots of hiking and exploring during this program. They will need a backpack to carry their notebook, water, and other supplies. Students in the past have used small backpacks with a water bladder (camelback) attached with success.

  • Water - It seems common sense but sometimes children forget to be prepared. Please ensure they have enough water for the 2 ½ hours I am with them every Friday. The camelback backpack works very well for this as the children ensure their water is filled when they grab their backpack. Also, they never forget their water bottle if it is attached to their backpack!

  • Gardening Gloves - Your child will be doing lots of work in the Wrightwood Community Garden. Our plan is to grow native plants to replant in the burn areas from the blue cut fire. Also, your child will be doing lots of hands-on work in regard to bushcraft and survival. Having gloves will protect their hands when handling rough or sharp materials.
